Giulio DulicnatiI am interested in how people interpret language in context (Pragmatics). In my PhD I am trying to answer the question of what role the cooperation between interlocutors plays in verbal communication. I am also working together with Diana Mazzarella and Jenni Rodd on a project focusing on how we interpret metaphors. Metaphors are utterances that are not interpreted literally. For example, the sentence “she is no angel” is not usually interpreted as meaning that the person in question is not a supernatural being sent from God. Metaphors are extremely common in language use and we interpret them seemingly without effort. In our project we are trying to discover how we manage to interpret metaphors and what is their relationship with ambiguity.
